I’m so excited to be heading up to Ayrshire this autumn to join forces with the wonderful Julie of A Curious Arrangement for a very special botanical casting workshop on Saturday 24th October (10am - 3pm)
The workshop will take place in an enchanting converted church, where Julie creates her beautiful floral masterpieces. Surrounded by flowers, foliage and all the loveliness of autumn, we’ll spend the day learning, creating and getting our hands a little bit messy.
What we’ll be doing
I’ll take you step by step through my botanical casting technique, teaching you how to capture the delicate impressions of fresh flowers and foliage in clay before preserving them in plaster.
Each participant will create their own 20cm botanical roundel, using flowers and foliage foraged from Julie’s beautiful walled garden.
We’ll begin the day outdoors, foraging and gathering a selection of seasonal botanicals to work with. Back in the studio, I’ll show you how to roll out the clay and arrange your chosen flowers and foliage before taking their impressions.
We’ll then mix and pour the plaster into your botanical impressions before breaking for a delicious seasonal lunch.
Once the plaster has had time to set, we’ll return to reveal and clean your casts, uncovering the beautiful botanical impressions hidden within.
You’ll leave with your very own handmade botanical artwork and, hopefully, a new love for the wonderfully tactile process of botanical casting.
A few practical things
No previous casting experience is necessary — this workshop is suitable for complete beginners.
As part of the day we’ll be foraging outdoors in the garden, so please bring:
Sturdy shoes suitable for the garden
A warm, waterproof jacket
An old shirt or apron to wear during the casting process
Clothes you don’t mind getting a little messy
Most importantly, come ready to spend a lovely, creative day surrounded by flowers and good company. I can’t wait to see what beautiful casts you create!
